March 2011 Bon's Mots

By Bonnie Bagley
National Board Representative

And the winner is . . .

Thanks to the many who answered my request and sent suggestions for a clever name for my column. It came down to two finalists: "Bonnie on Board" (quite alliterative), and "Bon's Mots" ( bon mot / ˈbän ˈmō; ˌbôn ˈmō/) — French for "good words." Therefore, Bon's Mots, the winner, which was my favorite and came from several different members, means "Bonnie's good words."
Many thanks to all of you for your suggestions.

ACBL Committees

The ACBL President, as does our D17 President, appoints the members and the chairs of the national committees of the League. There are five standing committees, twenty-five permanent committees, two special committees, one management committee, four "other" ACBL bodies and four appointed positions. For a complete listing of these, please go to my website at
Of these ACBL committees, I have been appointed to the following:

Plus – the following three permanent committees:

In addition, I was appointed to the existing NABC Advisory Committee, whose purpose is to advise and support the ACBL management staff involved in planning and running our national tournaments. And finally, I was also elected to one of the "other" ACBL bodies, as a Trustee of the ACBL Charity Foundation, whose purpose is to make substantial monetary contributions to a variety of charitable organizations, in hopes of creating good public relations for the league.
I am quite excited to start work on all these committees, and look forward to the board meetings at the Louisville, Kentucky Spring NABC this month.

D17 Tournaments

District 17 started the regional tournament trail with, as usual, the Navajo Trail Albuquerque Regional ... and the gauntlet has been thrown. Albuquerque had a record-setting 2026 tables, which does not include the 68 tables of players who competed in the D17 North American Pairs finals.
This is a good sign for our D17 regionals, especially since Western Conference tournaments have been setting attendance records:

We cannot forget our record-setting, thriving, largest sectional in all of ACBL, the Great Western Holiday STAC in December, with 9150 tables. Bridge is alive and well in District 17 and the Western Conference, and we will all continue to work together to keep it that way.

D17 Board Meeting

The first D17 Board Meeting of 2011 was held in Albuquerque. The elected officers for 2011 are Carolyn Newcomb, Denver, president; Ralph Liguori, El Paso, vice president; Bonnie Bagley, secretary; Jerry Ranney, Denver, treasurer; and Karin Griffin, Albuquerque, elections secretary. Our new president, Carolyn, is busy appointing the committees and chairs. Please look for her first column in the April ScoreCard. John Van Ness, who had been the D17 President for as long as I've been on the D17 board (I came on in 2000), has stepped down from the presidency, but is still a D17 board member as Colorado at Large representative. John's concern for the district, its players, and its welfare is legendary. He will continue to be an important presence on the D17 board. It is with much appreciation for the many hours of hard work John has put in ... past, present and future ... that I thank him on behalf of myself and District 17 as a whole.

Western Conference Report

At the just completed annual board meeting Teri Atkinson, Bakersfield, California of District 22, was elected president of the Western Conference for 2011. Tom Shulman of Las Vegas was reelected as our conference treasurer, and I was elected Great Western STAC coordinator.
The board meets once a year and alternates the meeting site between the three districts of the Conference: D17, D21, and D22. This year the meeting was held at the new site of the popular Glitter Gulch Sectional at Bally's Hotel & Casino on the strip in Las Vegas. This site proved to be extremely popular and, coupled with the ever-striving-for-perfection tournament chairman Tom Shulman, the five day sectional produced a whopping 1235 tables – 388 more than last year!

As mentioned earlier, my new web site,, is now up and running. It's a work in progress, but hopefully there should be several items of interest, notably the masterpoint winnings of our District 17 players at the 2010 Fall NABC in Orlando. I'll try to keep the site timely and interesting.
