September 2014 Bon’s Mots

By Bonnie Bagley
National Board Representative

Another successful Las Vegas NABC is over. Those of you who attended had a fantastic time – that would be over 6,248 players who earned 118,695 masterpoints. A total of 739 members of D17 were in attendance, with John Kranyak, of Las Vegas, being the top D17 masterpoint winner, with 225.51 masterpoints. John was on the Paul Fireman team, which won the Roth Open Swiss Teams on the final weekend. As usual, the list of D17 masterpoint winners at the Las Vegas NABC may be found on my website -
The ACBL website has a new feature which enables you to see the masterpoint winners by district, state, unit, country. Check it out
This is a fantastic feature.

Before the fun began, there were the Board of Directors’ meetings. Stu Goodgold, from D21, was welcomed. Stu was D21’s First Alternate and became D21’s District Director upon the resignation of Bruce Blakely. ACBL CEO Robert Hartman presented the Management Report: through the end of June membership is 167,895, essentially flat. Tournament and club table count is trending lower, while STACs are up 2%.
Financially, ACBL is a bit behind budget.

ACBLscore+ Cancelled

Robert announced the termination of the ACBLscore+ project. He reported that a working group consisting of ACBL Board members, management internal staff and outside experts determined that efforts to develop a completely new system (ACBLScore+) fell short of what was required to work for the league’s members. The ACBL is now moving forward with plans to enhance the features and benefits of its existing scoring software, ACBLscore, and extend the life and functionality of the software for a long time to come. This is being done because:
• Our tournament directors, our club owners and operators and our members and players have confidence in the existing system; in its reliability, in its accuracy.
• It is a system they all know and have confidence in. We want to build on our success.
• Folks know how to use it; they know it works on their computers; they are comfortable with what they know and we want to add on to it.
• We want our club and tournament directors to be able to run games on their existing computers without expensive upgrades or complicated new lessons.
The total capitalized costs of the ACBLscore+ project is in excess of $1.5M, and it is being determined what portion of the project product can be re-purposed into the enhanced ACBLscore.

Board Motions

A  motion was passed implementing the NABC Strategic Committee’s schedules for the three 2015 NABCs on a trial basis. A new national event, the NABC+ Mixed Swiss Teams, will be held the second weekend of the Fall NABC.
A 10K (0-10,000 masterpoints) IMP Pairs and a 10K Fast Pairs will be held in the Fall NABC. The 10K Swiss Teams will be moved from the second Saturday and Sunday of the Fall NABC to the first Saturday and Sunday of the Fall NABC.

Masterpoint Adjustment

A  major accomplishment was the unanimous passing of the first reading (two readings are required; the second will be at the 2014 Fall NABC) of changes in masterpoint awards. A few of the changes:
NABC NAP Flight A winners – 100 MPs
Flight B NAP – 60 MPs
Flight C NAP – 40 MPs
NABC GNT Championship winners – 120 MPs
Flight A GNT – 85 MPs
Flight B GNT – 70 MPs
Flight C GNT – 45 MPs

There are more proposed changes involving the depth of overall awards, the “M” factor, the “T” factor, the “R” factor; all of which I bowed to the experience and expertise of the board’s Masterpoint Committee.
One of the committee’s proposals is to allow a three-flight strati-flighted game. It was felt the popularity of the Gold Rush games has disadvantaged the player with just over 750 MPs who must play in the A/B Flight. In 2015, one regional per district may utilize this event structure. The D17 Regional Tournament Committee, in consultation with Gary Zeiger, the D17 DIC, will determine which D17 regional is best suited to try this new event.

wiss Teams wins will no longer be Grand Life Master qualifiers after 2013, due to declining attendance in both events. Also due to declining numbers, effective January 2014, the following will no longer be on the NABC schedule: the National 199er Pairs (Summer NABC), the National 99er Pairs and the Non-Life Master Pairs (both Fall NABC).

Please visit my website: for the complete minutes of the jam-packed 2013 Summer ACBL Board meeting motions; the above is only a small portion of what was covered.
